Chapter 5
User-Generated Content on the Internet
Much of the information in Chapter 5 I am not familiar with. I never heard the terms of push and pull technologies. After reading, I would say that I used push technology more than pull technology. I am familiar with instant messaging a couple of social networks, and I have used photo and video sharing sites. I am a child of the Web 2.0 era. The old internet that familiarized Usenet has developed and I use the newer version that includes Google. If I want to get up to date news information, I would likely use the news aggregator Google news. I commonly use it for the weather and sports scores. I never subscribed to a podcast, but my dad has used them for football discussions in the past. I may have to try one for iTunes instead. I never heard the term mashup, but I know now that I have used one. When using Amazon, I always thought, “Wow!” there are so many things to choose from, and its because of the application programming interfaces that Amazon has built in. Also, since I am familiar with Google and like going to the gym, I will have to checkout the Google fit API. It is interesting to learn how all these features mentioned describe their use on a website. However, it is more interesting how they are used in social media.
I do not really have social media except TikTok. I am familiar with how to instant message on that app. I do use text messages and iMessage on my smartphone. My dad does remember using chat rooms when he was a teenager, and then AOI instant messenger in college. I know my mom uses Facebook messenger quite often to talk to friends and family. It was not very long ago but I do remember using a voice over internet protocol called Skype during Covid-19 pandemic to talk to friends and family. Craigslist.org my family used to sell stuff but not for a while now. My mother uses Facebook very often to sell items and post ads when we have a yard sale. I still do not have a Facebook account. At this point, I am unsure if I even want one. In the future I may get accounts on LinkedIn.com, Yammer.com, or Surmo.com when I begin a job search after college. As I said earlier, I do have TikTok and I know that it is like Instagram, which my whole family does have. They just mostly laugh at dog videos; they do not post content like other people. The site I am most familiar with is YouTube. I watch YouTube regularly. Since I do like YouTube it is time to also explore Google and Bing videos. I am not getting involved with any blogs, but my dad goes on a Penn State football one which was critical this past week. He also has a Twitter account which he just reads because he does not tweet or retweet because his work can look at. He also said that there is a lot of cyberbullying on Twitter and his blog. There is no online reputation management service on those sites.
