Chapter 1

Browser Basics

I have been using a computer for several years and searching the internet is a daily thing for me. After reading, there are a few things I did not know about the internet. For example, I did not know that there was a difference between the term internet involving a lower or upper case “I.”  When searching, I knew that “www” meant worldwide web, but I never thought about how it was broken down. On webpages, I always referred to the blue underlined words as links, not hyperlinks. I am interested to learn more about HTML tags, and how to code them. The four components of a URL explain why URLs are set up how they are. Also, I was only familiar with the search engines of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. Mozilla Firefox is a form that I would like to learn more about.

A couple of the topics discussed in Module 1, I have used while using the internet. I have experience navigating and searching web pages. Using the back and forward arrows and refreshing/reloading are skills with which I am familiar. Finding information under the tabs on web pages, I have done in past school projects. The use of bookmarks is something that I have recently become familiar with. On my computer, I created bookmarks for the LCCC site and E-books and plan to create more at I need them. The reading brought up cookies which I did not know what they were except that they annoy me while on the internet. I was nice to see there is a way to manage them. The fair use of copyrighted material is valuable knowledge when researching to avoid plagiarism.

In section 1.2 it was interesting to see the different features on each of the search engines. I use Microsoft Edge the most and some of these features are going to help make browsing easier. The reading list/reading view is something that I did not know existed. The sharing of websites and web notes I will start to try utilizing. I rarely use Google Chrome, but I found the translation feature very cool. That can be extremely useful. The creation of extensions and customizing your theme makes it a great option. I am not knowledgeable with Firefox. The RSS is a beneficial tool, and it sounds like it is easy to use. I am looking forward to learning more about topics I am not familiar with.
