Chapter 4

Information Resources on the Web

I can tell that I am becoming more familiar with search engines. Using the advanced search on Google was new to me but I recognize the any time function on Bing. Finding the most up to date information on any page is important. I also recognized the different topics listed on top to narrow down your search. I do think that I still have work to do when determining the accuracy of a website. I do know that I will not be using Wikipedia or blogs for reliable information. Using a news aggregate to find current stories I unknowingly have used in the past I have explored sites like ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and CNN after seeing stuff on TV. I used AccuWeather and The Weather Channel to check the weekly weather but also to check weather when we are going on vacation. I have never looked for a job online, but my dad has said he has posted jobs on CareerBuilder.com and Indeed.com through his job. When we were in the Covid-19 pandemic I looked at the numbers on the CDC website regularly. I know that my parents have used the WebMD symptom checker cause my dad will say “Don’t listen to Doctor Google.” My family would like to move down south someday, and I know my parents have a Zillow.com account. They are always using filters, looking at map view, and selecting amenities. When we go on vacation we use Twiddy.com to find the best house for the entire family, and you need to use filters to narrow the search down. Who doesn’t use the E-commerce website, Amazon.com.

In high school and when I took English 101, we learned how important copy writing and avoiding plagiarism. We learned to cite everything when using someone else’s work. Something interesting to me is public domain. I didn’t know that copyrighted work can expire and is free to use without permission. I still plan to cite everything. It hasn’t happened to me, but if a website is disconnected from the internet the digital objective identifier can help. Something I didn’t know about citing is how to break a URL if it goes over one line. I am embarrassed to say that I only used articles I found on Google to research topics. I was never aware that so many resources such as online references, periodic databases, virtual libraries, and government websites were available. The only multimedia that I have used for papers are pictures, text, and videos. I am familiar with YouTube, Spotify, and Pandora when it comes to music and movies. In our house, we do stream movies and shows regularly on all apps. Being aware of how to use the many resources discussed will help me become a better student in the future.
