Chapter 2

Basic Communication on the Internet: Email

Like the internet, I have been using email for several years. It was mostly during high school, and they assigned me an email address with a username and a domain specific to a Wilkes-Barre Area High School account. I found using email was not that difficult. I did not realize the protocols servers or software used while sending an email. I also never knew that an email was split into three parts: message header, message body, and signature. I just assumed it to a recipient and anyone else I needed to add. Sending these emails became normal and just using To Line, Cc, and subject line. Bcc is something that I just learned now. I always wondered what the KB or MB in my attachments meant and now I know it as the size of the email. Looking back, I usually detach the file into my Google Drive. When writing an email, I did always used proper Netiquette. I always wanted to get to the point. I never used any shortcuts, acronyms, or silly emoticons. I do not even use emojis while texting.

The type of email service that I use is Gmail. This means that I am not familiar with any email apps that use protocols sending POP messages or POP3 messages. I realize that these types of services all send, receive, forward, store, print messages, and filter out spam/unsolicited commercial email. Gmail does too and I find it easier to use Gmail and deal with all the advertisements. No matter what email service or app you use. You are always at risk for a virus. This chapter reminded me that I still must put an antivirus app on my phone and computer.

As I said earlier, I am familiar with Gmail. The only problem is I do not know as much as I thought I did about my Google account. I know how to write, send, reply, delete, print messages, and attach a file with ease. I also became familiar with saving files to Google Drive. However, when it comes to managing contacts, creating groups or labels, and then deleting them. I am clueless but I am going to learn these features. I just created it a couple of years ago when my parents got the Life360 app. I started using it quite a bit more when applying for scholarships and going to career fairs. Now that I am a student at LCCC, I have no choice but to learn Microsoft Outlook and that is going very well.
